Building for

BURKINA

This holiday season, give the gift of education to a village in Burkina Faso, one of the world’s economically poorest countries.

BUILD WITH US

Supporters like you funded over 100 schools in seven developing countries this year. Help buildOn raise $30,000 to construct our final school of 2015 in Kilo, Burkina Faso.

Why We’re Building in Burkina Faso:

  • A buildOn constructed school includes three classrooms and provides learning space for more than 100 girls and boys.
  • Girls attend buildOn schools in equal numbers with boys, dramatically improving health, economic and community outcomes.
  • We build in villages with lack schools or have dark, overcrowded mud and thatch huts acting as makeshift classrooms.
  • Fewer than 50% of children in Burkina Faso regularly attend school, but buildOn is working to change that.
  • Low education levels, gender inequality, disease and malnutrition are major barriers to meeting the country’s basic needs.
  • Burkina Faso is the world’s 7th poorest country with one of lowest literacy levels.
  • Entire villages contribute to construction and leadership, including women, who have traditionally been denied leadership roles.

Meet People We're Empowering in Burkina Faso:

  • adama

“I would like to be a doctor when I grow up. I like to make people feel better … It was hard to learn in our old school. It’s dark and we can’t go to class when it rains because the water comes in.”

    Sam, 7-year-old student

Nikiema loves math, but only recently started attending school. Her parents didn’t think she would get a good education in her village’s school – a dark, one-room thatch hut. When they learned buildOn was building a new school in the village, they saw hope for her education and started sending her to class.

  • Barkisou_Burkina Faso

Deprived of education, Barkissou was unable to write her own name and was married as a teenager. But she saw hope for the future in a new buildOn school: “Knowledge is on the pages of books, and with knowledge comes the power to dream… Through education my children can realize their dreams.”

Barkissou, a young mother and school building volunteer
