Serving in Solidarity

We are proud to present the inaugural NYC Constructive Leadership Award at this year’s gala. This award honors a student and partner who represent and show exceptional leadership through their involvement and impact with buildOn. They never give up, and they always serve others before self, continuing to break the cycle of poverty, illiteracy, and low expectations.

The evening’s program will highlight buildOn’s focus
on the standing in solidarity with all members of our community through constructive leadership:

  • Defying Gender Stereotypes

In countries with strict traditional gender roles, buildOn’s all women construction teams, and female Country Directors show communities that there’s no limit to what women can do. And in the U.S., buildOn helps young men, growing up in some of America’s most violent communities, break out of non-caring, toxic stereotypes and cultivate compassion through service to others.

  • Providing Equal Access to Education

buildOn has had a long-standing commitment to gender equity in the classroom. 50% of all primary age children in buildOn schools are girls, and 72% of the students in buildOn’s Adult Literacy Classes are women. Additionally, buildOn Enroll focuses on bringing out-of-school children, who are disproportionately girls, back to the classroom.

  • Building the Next Generation of Women Leaders

Women are leading powerful transformations across the globe. 60% of the buildOn students serving and advocating for their communities in the U.S. are young women. And women comprise 50% of every community-led Leadership Team in the countries where we build schools.
