10 Fall Community Service Ideas
Fall is a season of change, and the perfect time to make a difference in your community. As the weather cools and school kicks into high gear, there are plenty of ways to serve others while building leadership skills. Whether you want to support your neighbors, protect the environment, or help local students succeed, here are ten fall service ideas inspired by the work buildOn students do across the country every week.
1. Rake Leaves for Neighbors
Many older adults or busy families could use a hand with fall yardwork. Grab a rake, some bags, and a few friends to clear leaves for neighbors who need extra support. buildOn students frequently help rake leaves in local parks and community gardens to keep them clean and ready for winter.

2. Host a Coat Drive
As temperatures drop, warm coats become essential. Collect gently used coats, hats, and gloves and donate them to a local shelter or community center. buildOn students across our regions frequently help process donated clothes at places like the Children’s Center in Detroit.
3. Volunteer at a Soup Kitchen or Pantry
Fall is harvest season, but many families still struggle with food insecurity. Spend a day packaging groceries or serving meals at a local food pantry. Many buildOn students find this kind of work impactful, rating it as the most memorable service they have done!

4. Plant Fall Bulbs for Spring Blooms
Community gardens don’t close when summer ends. Plant tulips, daffodils, or garlic bulbs in the fall so your neighborhood will bloom with color and fresh food come spring. You can also help plant saplings in local parks that will provide shade once the weather warms up.

5. Organize a School Supply Drive
Students often run out of supplies a few months into the school year. Collect notebooks, pencils, and backpacks to distribute at a nearby school.
6. Lead a Park or Trail Cleanup
Crisp autumn days are perfect for cleaning up local parks and trails. Gather friends, bring trash bags, and make your favorite outdoor spaces safer and more welcoming for humans and wildlife alike.

7. Support a Local Election
Civic engagement is service, too. Volunteer to help register voters, hand out information, or work at a polling place during the fall election season. Last fall, buildOn students in Detroit helped spread the word about the importance of voting ahead of the 2024 election.

8. Create or Volunteer at a Local Fall Event
Help build community with by hosting or helping out at a seasonal event in your neighborhood this fall. buildOn students did this by creating their own Halloween event with spooky games and activities for kids in Detroit last year.

9. Tutor Younger Students
With school back in session, many younger students could use help with homework. Offer tutoring or reading sessions at a library, after-school program, or community center. buildOn students frequently tutor their younger neighbors, like at P.S. 35 in the Bronx.

10. Donate to buildOn
Fall, especially late fall, is also a season of giving. By donating to buildOn, you help students in the U.S. transform their neighborhoods by participating in all of the service activities listed above. You’ll also be supporting our work to expand access to education in communities around the world. Your contribution will help ignite opportunity in every season!
