A Brother’s Sacrifice in Malawi
When Patrick was five years old, he lost both of his parents.
As he and his younger sister Hannah grew older, education became a luxury they could not afford. Faced with an impossible choice, Patrick left school so his sister could stay enrolled, sacrificing his own future in the hope that she might one day have opportunities he never would.
Today, Hannah is preparing to graduate from the University of Malawi. Patrick is back in school himself. And their story reveals something powerful: what happens when school construction, adult literacy, and student enrollment efforts work together to create opportunity that lasts across generations.
What You’ll See in This Story
- A brother’s sacrifice to keep his sister in school.
- The role community members played in helping Patrick return to the classroom.
- Why buildOn’s three global programs are most powerful when they work together.
Choosing His Sister’s Future
Patrick knew the value of education, making his sacrifice all the more powerful.
“I knew that we both couldn’t get an education, so it was necessary for me to help my sister get an education first,” Patrick explained. “If she could complete her education, one day she would be there to support me as well.”
To make that possible, Patrick left school and began working.
He sold sugarcane. He worked in nearby fields. Day after day, he put aside his own dreams so Hannah could keep pursuing hers.
For Hannah, her brother’s sacrifice has never been forgotten.
“It really means a lot to me. I love him and I don’t take it for granted. It makes me feel really loved by him.”
A Dream Bigger Than Either Expected

Patrick hoped his sister would one day finish secondary school.
She went even further.
Today, Hannah is completing her final year at the University of Malawi, a milestone Patrick once struggled to imagine was possible.
“I didn’t expect that she would make it to university,” he said. “My expectation was that she would end after finishing her secondary education.”
But while Hannah’s dream was becoming reality, Patrick’s own education story was still unfinished.
What Happens When Communities Invest in Education?

Patrick’s return to school wasn’t the result of a single program. It was the result of a community that had been transformed by education.
Across the countries we operate in, buildOn’s work begins with school construction, creating safe classrooms where children can learn. Our Adult Literacy Programs help parents and community members develop the skills, confidence, and economic opportunities needed to support education. Our Enroll Program then works to ensure children who have never attended school, or who have dropped out, can find their way back to the classroom.

Together, these programs create pathways to opportunity that extend far beyond any single student. In Chang’ombe, Patrick and Hannah’s home village, the process began when the community built a school with buildOn in 2021, and launched an Adult Literacy Program soon after.

Men and women participating in Chang’ombe’s Adult Literacy Program and Village Savings and Loans group took notice of Patrick’s determination to continue his education. Inspired, they came together to help pay his tuition so he could return to school and attend a Community Day Secondary School.
The support meant more than financial assistance.
“It really meant a lot because not everyone gets the support that I did,” Patrick said. “These people really showed me love when nobody else did.”

Education Is the Key to Ending Poverty
Today, Patrick walks 15 kilometers to and from school every day. The journey is long and exhausting. But for Patrick, education is worth every step.
“I was so happy because I knew education was the only way to overcome poverty,” he said. “I also knew that once I got an education, I could become self-reliant and help other needy students just like myself and my sister.”
His goal is not simply to succeed for himself.
Like Hannah, he wants to create opportunities for others.

Paying It Forward
As Hannah prepares to graduate from university, she already knows what comes next.
“After finding a good job, I have to support my brother back so that he can also reach university,” she said. “And I will also help others who want to be like me.”
Patrick shares that same vision.
He hopes to continue his education through university and use what he learns to help students facing the same challenges he once did.
Their story is a reminder that education is never just about one person. When one child gains access to opportunity, the impact spreads outward to families, communities, and future generations.
How Does Opportunity Grow?
Patrick and Hannah’s story is a glimpse into how lasting change happens.
School construction creates safe places where children can learn. Adult Literacy Programs equip parents and community members with the skills, confidence, and economic opportunities to support education. The Enroll Program helps ensure every child has a pathway back to the classroom.

Together, these programs reinforce one another. And they create stronger communities where opportunity is passed from one generation to the next.
Patrick sacrificed his education so Hannah could stay in school. Today, because his community invested in him, both siblings are pursuing their dreams.
That’s the power of education when an entire community is part of the journey.
