Students Engaged Monthly

Total Service Hours

buildOn’s service learning programs in 15 schools in the Bronx, Manhattan, and Brooklyn engage students in their own struggling neighborhoods and show them the limitless opportunities for success in their paths.

By national standards, New York City’s public high schools are experiencing a truancy and drop-out epidemic. In the Bronx, which is the poorest congressional district in the US, only 60% of students graduate from high school. Some of New York’s ongoing service projects include mentoring children with disabilities and spending time with seniors in nursing homes. buildOn has also integrated service learning curriculum into classrooms through the buildOn Youth Engagement Zone at Banana Kelly High School.

“I am part of the buildOn movement because I want to make my community a better place and just the world in general. It makes me feel better as a person.”

“Through service I have learned about myself and my community. This learning becomes knowledge. With this knowledge I have become a leader. buildOn pushed me out of my comfort zone, exposed me to new ideas, and created a different perspective on how I view the world.”

“The reason why people join gangs is because they are scared. I’m like, what are you scared of? For me, since I’ve been a part of buildOn, the only thing I’m scared of is the world not changing.”

Mo Tunkara, Mott Hall Bronx High School
