buildOn Students March Against Violence in Boston

Even though the buildOn program at Jeremiah E. Burke High School in Boston just launched at the beginning of this school year, students at Burke are already coming to buildOn to address the issues that matter most to them.

Recently, buildOn students at Burke came together for a March Against Violence in honor of Raekwon Brown, a classmate who was shot and killed near the school in June. The three mile march included buildOn students from Burke High School and the Community Academy of Science & Health (CASH), as well as 44 members from the community, including members of Raekwon’s family.

“We are impacted by (the violence) a lot more because we are still growing up in this community, so it’s our turn to speak up,” Burke student Chloe Connolly told NECN/NBC Boston in an interview about the event.

Chloe was one of several students from Burke who led the effort to promote the march by creating fliers and posters. “We want it to stop—we grew up around violence—we don’t want it no more,” Chloe said.
