MADALITSO BAND
Intuitive, authentic, and full of ruthless rhythms, Madalitso Band will make you clap, dance, smile, and rethink everything you thought you knew about African sound and instrumentation.
The Malawian musical duo, composed of Yobu Maligwa on babatoni (a slide bass with one string) and Yosefe Kalekeni on four-string guitar and foot drum, began their journey as buskers on the streets of Lilongwe. Today they’ve toured across Africa, the U.S. and Europe, including a recent appearance at the legendary Glastonbury Festival in England.
Their most recent album Ma Gitala — which Uncut magazine called “effortlessly lovely” — was released in June 2025. They’re also the subject of a new documentary, The Banjo Boys, premiering at the African Diaspora International Film Festival in New York on December 4th.
