buildOn Attends National Conference on Service & Volunteering Youth Track
We at buildOn love service and service learning. buildOn was a proud co-presenter at this year’s Youth Track at the Turning Point 2012 National Conference on Volunteering and Service (NCVS) in Chicago, organized by GenerationOn. Nine of our Chicago members received scholarships to attend the NCVS conference, where they networked with nonprofit professionals and thought leaders who are coming together to create solutions to make change. On Monday and Tuesday, members participated in workshops that will help them develop their leadership skills.
Around 50 teens attended Sunday’s Youth Summit to listen to a panel of inspirational youth leaders talk about how they started their own nonprofits. Participating teens brainstormed how they could create a project that would impact their community, such as creating green space or a recreational area for urban teens. The highlight of the day was participating in a service project. The entire group spent almost an hour creating blackout boxes for seniors with snacks, water, flashlights, and other emergency items that come in handy during natural disasters. The teens customized the boxes with notes and decorated them with drawings while bopping along to classic oldies music. The best part: they walked home with games and toys donated by Hasbro.
