buildOn Honors Martin Luther King Jr. Through Service
Our nation comes together to remember Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy of honor and service on Monday. buildOn students will embody Dr. King’s dream while doing service on this national holiday. Here are just some of the highlights of the MLK activities we have planned.
Connecticut
Bridgeport students planned activities centered around the theme “What it Means to Dream” with 3rd graders at Wakeman Boys & Girls Club. Activities include a discussion of Martin Luther King Jr.’s life, a screening of the movie The Great Debaters, arts and crafts, and baking cupcakes.
Stamford students will celebrate MLK at the Martin Luther King Jr. apartments! buildOn is unveiling a mural of Dr. King the group started working on in October, and will be doing children’s activities related to civil rights and dreams for the future.
Norwalk students will read Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech to seniors at The Marvin, and discuss what has changed in the past 50 years and what the group’s dreams are for the next 50.
Philadelphia
Philly students will be at an unemployment job fair at Girard College. They will pass out clothes they’ve collected through a “Pop Up Shop” at this fair.
California
buildOn will be with the Boys and Girls Club’s middle school group in the Mission District. After reflecting on Martin Luther King Jr.’s quotes, which touch on his philosophies on nonviolence, they’ll make posters about nonviolence and march through the neighborhood.
On a similar note, students at International Studies Academy will create a “nonviolence quilt” made from fabric panels that reflect their dream of peace.
Detroit
Oak Park High School is hosting a Kids Against Hunger event. Our Detroit staff said students will be packing 10,000 meals — and the students love doing it!
New York
Mayor Michael Bloomberg is making an appearance in Coney Island! Students are going to be collaborating with NYC Service by helping beautify P.S. 90 (which suffered water-damaged after Hurricane Sandy). Our volunteers will run a children’s fair for the students who go to that school, make coloring books and do a workshop on prejudice and tolerance.
Students in the Bronx will be making a mural at Casa Yurumein, and a group in Brooklyn is making Martin Luther King Jr.-related coloring books to deliver to neighboring elementary schools and recreational centers.
Chicago
Chicago is having an “MLK Service Extravaganza” with Uplift Community High School and Nicholas Senn High School students. Students start the day with breakfast and bingo with the seniors living at Ralph J. Pomeroy Apartments. Then the group will visit the visually disabled residents at Friedman Place and talk to them about Martin Luther King Jr.
Students at Lindblom Math and Science Academy are joining the Martin Luther King Jr. community celebration at the Church of the Atonement, helping with children’s activities, health screenings and passing out food.
