Service & Leadership: The buildOn Story in Bridgeport
In a city with a deep industrial heritage and resilient spirit, Bridgeport’s next generation of leaders is emerging through an unexpected catalyst: service learning. Through buildOn’s programs, students across Bridgeport’s public high schools are redefining what youth leadership looks like while tackling their community’s most pressing challenges.

The Power of Youth-Led Change
When winter cold snaps hit their city, buildOn students respond by creating hand warming kits for their unhoused neighbors. When local families struggle with food insecurity, they organize food drives and staff local pantries. These aren’t just service projects—they’re student-led solutions to real community needs.

Beyond Traditional Education
buildOn’s approach in Bridgeport goes deeper than conventional community service. Through structured service learning programs, students develop:
- Critical thinking skills through project planning and execution
- Leadership abilities by identifying community needs and organizing responses
- Professional competencies through real-world problem-solving
- Civic engagement through direct community action

The Tangible Impact of buildOn
The results of this innovative approach are clear:
Creating Tomorrow’s Leaders
Crucial to buildOn’s service methodology is the agency we grant our participants. Students don’t just participate in service—they lead it. From environmental projects that beautify community spaces to mentorship programs supporting younger students, buildOn participants are driving positive change while developing crucial leadership skills.

Meet Imajin
For example, take Imajin, a senior at Fairchild Wheeler High School. What makes her extraordinary isn’t just her 120+ hours of service—it’s how she’s transformed her passion into community impact.

Despite having to balance schoolwork and family responsibilities, Imajin took the initiative to improve her neighborhood and led a large-scale community clean-up event. She passionately recruited over 50 volunteers for each service, coordinated with school staff to secure donations of supplies, and worked tirelessly alongside her peers, offering encouragement and support.
Imajin courageously spoke at an afterschool program meeting, presenting a well-researched case for why student voices should be included in decision-making processes. Her efforts led to the establishment of a student ambassador committee, which now plays a vital role in shaping service decisions at Fairchild Wheeler. And Imajin isn’t alone! There are thousands of buildOn students like her across Bridgeport, ready to make their city a better place.

Service in Action
A recent example of our Bridgeport programs in action was a Saturday service helping Filling in the Blanks run a food drive. Students took time out of their weekends to make sure others in their community were able to get the food they needed to support their families. Through this powerful act of solidarity and service, the students not only handed out fresh, healthy food to their neighbors, they also showed them that their community cared about them.

Looking Forward
As buildOn continues to grow in Bridgeport, the focus remains on giving students the tools to be agents of change in their community. Through service learning, these young leaders are not only addressing current challenges—they’re developing the skills and perspective to create lasting positive change in their city.
