Living Dr. King's Dream: How buildOn Leads Through Service and Solidarity

As Martin Luther King, Jr. Day approaches, we’re reminded of Dr. King’s enduring vision and the importance of his life’s work. His powerful words resonate with buildOn’s mission as students across the United States take action to transform their communities through service, and people across the globe join hands to build a better world.

At buildOn, we don’t just remember Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s words—we actively live them. Through service learning and education, the members of our movement embody his vision of creating positive change through direct action and solidarity.

Building Equitable Communities in the United States

“Everybody can be great because everybody can serve.” — Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

This fundamental truth guides buildOn’s service learning programs in the United States. We believe that every student has the power to create change, regardless of their circumstances.

Some students in our programs come from difficult backgrounds—broken homes, gun violence, and extreme poverty. Yet, through serving meals in Chicago shelters and organizing food drives in Oakland, our students prove that greatness comes not through your circumstances but through how you serve others.

“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?'” — Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

buildOn students answer this question daily through their commitment to community service. Across cities in the U.S., they contribute thousands of hours addressing critical needs in their communities.

How buildOn students serve others:

In Boston, students advocate for housing justice by engaging with local government. In the Bronx, they compassionately welcome new migrants, and in Detroit, they ensure their unhoused neighbors have warm clothing during harsh winters. Our students understand that true leadership means taking action for others.

Cultivating a Global Perspective

“If we are to have peace on earth, our loyalties must become ecumenical rather than sectional. Our loyalties must transcend our race, our tribe, our class, and our nation; and this means we must develop a world perspective.” — Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

buildOn’s mission transcends boundaries. Our work unites individuals across cities, countries, and continents in a shared mission of service and education. Through our global school-building programs and local service initiatives, students, staff, and volunteers develop what Dr. King called “a world perspective,” understanding how their actions connect to a larger movement for global change.

Some of the most transformative moments in our movement occur when buildOn U.S. students travel to partner countries to build schools. Through these experiences, they forge connections and work in solidarity with the communities they visit, becoming true global citizens.

“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.” — Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Like Dr. King, buildOn recognizes the interconnected nature of justice and inequality. Our students don’t just serve—they learn to identify and address systemic challenges in their communities and beyond. Through service learning, they understand how local actions contribute to broader social change, embodying Dr. King’s concept of “an inescapable network of mutuality.”

Education Through Service

“Intelligence plus character-that is the goal of true education.” — Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

buildOn’s approach to education goes beyond traditional academics. Through service learning, students develop both intellectual understanding and moral character. They analyze community needs, create solutions, and lead with empathy. This combination of knowledge and character development produces leaders who can carry forward Dr. King’s legacy of peaceful social change.

Through service learning, buildOn students learn about the systemic issues that face their communities and then tackle them head-on.

Living the Legacy of Dr. King

Every day, the buildOn movement demonstrates that Dr. King’s vision remains vital and achievable. Through service and education, we’re doing our part to build the world he envisioned—where everyone has the opportunity to serve, learn, and lead.

In the face of modern challenges—housing insecurity, environmental issues, and global poverty—our students and communities respond with the same spirit of hope and determination that has driven powerful movements in the past. We understand, as Dr. King did, that positive change comes through consistent, dedicated action in service to others.
