MLK Day of Service 2026: How buildOn Students Honored Dr. King Through Action

Each year on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, communities across the country come together to honor Dr. King’s legacy through service. For buildOn students, MLK Day is more than a day off: it’s a day on, as students in each of our regions take the day to give back while reflecting on Dr. King’s legacy.

On MLK Day 2026, buildOn students across Boston, Bridgeport, the Bronx, Detroit, and Chicago stepped up to serve their communities. Through hands-on service, reflection, and partnership, students lived out Dr. King’s vision of the Beloved Community, one rooted in justice, dignity, and collective action.

In the Bronx, buildOn students hosted an MLK Day resource fair designed for families of all ages.

Students packed care kits in advance and distributed them to the first 200 children at the event. Families participated in arts and crafts, face painting, games, and handmade “I Have a Dream” signs. Two raffles and free toys helped create a joyful, welcoming environment.

Hosted in partnership with Rising Ground, the event served more than 20 families, providing resources, connection, and a safe space for community.

Together, they packed 534 winter wellness kits for residents of five senior homes. Each kit included cough drops, tissues, tea, honey, lemons, warm blankets, and information about local events and resources.

“We thought it would be a great time to show our love for the community,” said Eric, a buildOn in Detroit student. “Even though it was cold, it didn’t matter. We still came to help whoever needs help. It was an amazing day!”

The service reflected Dr. King’s call to honor dignity across generations.

The focus was simple and powerful: meet neighbors where they are and keep Dr. King’s dream alive through service.

In Boston, buildOn students participated in a powerful MLK Day of Service focused on gun violence prevention and healing.

The day opened with a keynote speech from Massachusetts State Senator Liz Miranda, joined by leaders from the Massachusetts Coalition to Prevent Gun Violence, Louis D. Brown Peace Institute, and Fresh Start 508. Speakers shared lived experiences and policy perspectives, grounding students in both urgency and hope.

After the keynote, students got to work assembling care kits for families impacted by gun violence, translating the words of the panel speakers into direct action.

“What our students appreciated most was the opportunity to hear a wide range of perspectives from people across Boston,” Engagement Specialist Ariana Angus shared. “The speakers pushed the students to listen deeply and engage with viewpoints they may never have encountered before.”

The experience reflected Dr. King’s belief that learning must lead to action.
