Schools Built to Date
Volunteer Work Days
In the Haitian villages where buildOn constructs classrooms, our schools are often the only structures built to withstand earthquakes, hurricanes, and severe storms, and many buildOn schools served as community shelters during Hurricane Matthew in 2016.
The UN’s Human Development Index ranks Haiti as the poorest country in the western hemisphere. Of the 10.7 million people living in Haiti, 54 percent of the population live below the poverty line. But despite the severe challenges in Haiti, more than 35,000 children and adults attend buildOn schools every day.
“I want my students to finish high school and go to college and help communities develop. Some might become doctors, engineers.”
Madam Sonise, Teacher — Delva, Haiti
“Every day, I take part in this work to make sure that we have this school in this community. I will come here every day to build the school because it is that important.”
Ivna Paul, Community Volunteer — Duverger, Haiti
“Yes, I’m excited about getting a new school because in the new school we won’t get wet when it rains.”
Witchuna, first grade student — Delva, Haiti
