Schools Built to Date
The West African nation of Mali is one of the least developed countries in the world according to the UN Human Development Index, and nearly half the population lives below the poverty line. Lack of proper classrooms, especially in rural villages, has kept Mali’s literacy rate below 40 percent. Because of buildOn’s work, the rural regions of Bougouni, Kalikoro, Segou, and Sikasso now have access to hundreds of classrooms, and more than 38,000 children, parents, and grandparents attend buildOn schools every day.
“I didn’t go to school, but I love education. Education is important. It can improve your own life and the lives of your children. Thanks the Adult Literacy Program, I am now more independent.”
Sanata Togola, Adult Literacy Student — Bla, Mali
“I was the first woman on the work site. It was a good example to all, and I made everyone get there on time… When I saw people hand out the tools and we began to dig, my dream was becoming a reality.”
Komba Dumbia, Community Volunteer
